You are not gonna believe this…I’m going to start from the beginning.
My husband snores a lot, so he went to the doctor, and she sent him home with a machine to test for sleep apnea. and monitor his sleep for a few days. He did that, went back, and she says, nope, no sleep apnea. That was that, just gotta put up with the snoring.
Ok, so a few months later the doctor’s office calls and says that the Doctor would like to see him. I asked what for, and of course they were very cryptic with me. I told her he didn’t have any test results or anything we were waiting for. The lady says no, it was test results from a breathing test he had done. I said if you mean for the sleep apnea test, he’s already seen her about that. The receptionist says, no it was not that.
Ok, so off he goes to the appointment, comes home and tells me the doctor says he has COPD, and shows me a puffer and pamphlet she gave him on it. I’m like COPD? what the hell? That’s what my Dad passed away from only a few years ago. He says to me, no that was Emphasima you Dad had and I said guess what hun, they are the same thing. He was like, holy smokes, she didn’t really explain that to me.
OK, so now I’m angry and we are asking ourselves how the hell did she come up with a diagnosis of COPD with absolutely no prior tests. I was so worried because this is a serious disease, and seeing my Dad die from it was awful. The doctor had ordered more blood work and chest x-rays and wanted him to come back for another longer visit, so this time I went with him. When we got there she didn’t really know what we were there for and I was like, hey your office called us to be here for his blood work and chest x-rays that you had done. Oh yes, she says, and to talk more about the treatments for COPD. That’s when I said to her, “Could you please explain to us how you come to the diagnosis of COPD when there was never any tests done?” I told her, “Your office called and said his breathing tests were in and that’s why you wanted him here, however he’s never had a breathing test done”. She looked at my husband and said, “Have you never blown into a machine and had a test like that?”. He responded, “No”. She sort of gasped and then turned to her computer and pulled up the test results, which were NOT HIS!!!!!
Her office staff had scanned in the test results of someone else!
The Doctor apologized and kinda tried to make light of the error, and because I was so relieved that he didn’t have COPD, my anger didn’t set in until later when we got home. We had two weeks of worry and upset because of this mistake they made, and the poor fella who has COPD hadn’t been notified. Something like this just shouldn’t happen. I know mistakes happen, we are all human, but in that environment extra care should be taken so stuff like this does not happen. It’s inexcusable.
Anyway, I’m very relieved that my husband doesn’t have COPD, thank God for that.
